The first week at any new job is mentally exhausting, with new information and procedures being thrown left and right. One of my most memorable onboarding experiences at Markitors was taking a break from the new hire paperwork and getting a tour of the park that was near our office. Getting up and stretching our legs throughout an eight-hour workday makes a large difference in our mood and energy levels. As an employer, it’s important to encourage this type of wellness during the onboarding process! If you are working remotely currently, encourage breaks for stretching, going outside, or taking a 15-minute walk to break up the new employee’s day.

Make training fun! Boring “death by PowerPoint” training is forgettable and can cause new team members to resent their new employer instead of embracing the organization. Especially with important areas like information security awareness. Remote onboarding is all about communication from beginning to end. You need to make the new hire feel welcomed and then be available for guidance throughout the onboarding process. You need to be available via multiple communication channels: phone, text, email and Slack/MS Teams (depending on what your organization uses). At the end of the process, you need to ensure that you have answered all of the employee's questions and given them all of the tools they will need to start their job successfully.

Leave Time For Social Interaction And Fun
My best advice for onboarding new team members is to leave time for social interaction and fun. The first few weeks of any new job are stressful. There is so much information being thrown people’s way, they probably feel like they are drinking from a fire hose. Don’t forget to incorporate some get-to-know-you games, team lunches, and even a team happy hour on the Friday of the first week to break up the training and orientation. It will make your new hire feel more at ease and will help them develop relationships with people that can help them through their first few weeks.
